Express Entry: Canada has unique qualified federal trades draw

Since the launch of Express Entry in 2015 Canada has held only the 7th Federal Skilled Trades Program draw.

In two days Canada held their second Express Entry draw. A total of 250 Federal Skilled Trade System (FSTP) applicants received a permanent residence invitation to apply (ITA).

To receive an ITA, successful FSTP candidates required a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 415.Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held an all-program draw yesterday which saw 3,900 ITAs issued to candidates with at least 476 CRSs. Canada has issued 4,150 ITAs over that two day period.

Despite the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic, this year is proving to be a record year for Express Entry. Canada has already released 61,850 ITAs in 2020, the largest number of invitations released on this day relative to any other year since the introduction of Express Entry 2015.

Only the 7th draw from the FSTP since 2015

Today just marks the 7th FSTP-specific draw in the history of Express Entry.

The FSTP is a gateway to permanent residence for skilled workers eligible in a technical trade. It launched in 2013 to help address shortages of jobs in many professional trades in Canada.

Candidates in one of the following trades and professions ought to have at least two years of work experience:

  • Industrial, electrical, and building;
  • Maintenance, operating equipment;
  • Technical and supervisory employment in natural resources, agriculture and related manufacturing;
  • Processing, production, utilities, centralized control operations;
  • Cooks, Chefs;
  • Butchers, or boulders.

This accounts for the fewest number of ITAs issued under qualifying Express Entry programmes, due to the focused nature of the program. In fact, of the 85,300 ITAs released in 2019, only 1,000 went to the FSTP candidates.

One reason why the FSTP is so limited is that candidates appear to have lower CRS scores than those eligible for Express Entry through the Federal Professional Workers Program or Canadian Experience Class.

As such, IRCC holds rare FSTP-specific draws in order to support the labor market needs of Canada by successful trades candidates.Today was the first FSTP-specific 2020 pick, and the first since 16 October 2019.

About Express Entry

Express Entry is the method used by the federal government to handle applications for permanent residency, including for the FSTP. A CRS score is given to candidates based on their age, job experience, schooling, English or French proficiency and other factors. The highest scoring candidates are then invited through bi-weekly Express Entry draws to apply for permanent residence. IRCC processes most applications for permanent residency submitted through the Express Entry program within six months or less.
