Canada adds 30 days to travel restrictions

Corona virus travel restrictions and compulsory quarantine requirements will be extended until September end.

Canada is extending travel restrictions on incoming international travelers for another month as corona virus remains a public safety threat.

Travel restrictions are also continuing to September 30. This is the third time Canada has extended the travel restrictions initially enforced from March 18 to June 30. Monthly, the federal government has checked the corona virus situation and modified travel policies accordingly.

Moreover, the mandatory quarantine order which has been in force since March has also been extended. Restricted travelers would have to undergo a 14-day period of self-isolation if they are permitted to reach Canada.

Who will be coming to Canada?

The following categories of people are excluded from the travel restrictions according to Immigration , Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

  • Canadian nationals;
  • Permanent Inhabitants;
  • Some individuals allowed for permanent residence in Canada;
  • Some foreign temporary workers;
  • Many foreign students; and
  • Immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents (spouses or partners in common law, dependent children, dependent children of dependent children , parents or step parents ,guardians or tutors);
  • Please find the full list of excluded persons here.

Canada refuses to welcome Immigrants

Canada continues to accept immigrants entering the job market and helping to grow economically. For asylum-seekers working in healthcare, Canada provided a pathway to permanent residency this past month.

The IRCC also implemented a temporary policy where visitor status individuals who had Canadian job offers could apply for a work permit without leaving the country.

Immigrant services still continue to be successful, enabling applicants to take the next steps towards permanent residency.

Most ITAs which Express Entry has ever given

Although the number of permanent residents admitted to Canada is still down compared to this period last year, the federal government has released more Invitations to Apply (ITAs) via the Express Entry system in 2020 than any year before, according to the latest IRCC statistics.

Four Express Entry draws had been held in August. Canada welcomed applicants to any Express Entry-managed federal program that includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

Canada also held an Express Entry draw aimed at members of the Provincial Candidate Program (PNP). A further 600 Detailed Ranking System points are automatically awarded to Express Entry candidates who are granted a provincial nomination via a PNP and are thus essentially guaranteed to obtain an ITA at a subsequent Express Entry draw.

The provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island have held PNP draws this month.

Canada’s Immigration Future

The Canadian public and the federal government both have a largely optimistic view on immigration. But the global pandemic has raised economic problems that will impact immigration both in Canada and abroad.

Foreigners usually also want to come to Canada, as many say that Canada would not experience the economic distress as badly as their country of origin. At the same time, the economic downturn in foreign countries may make it harder for some citizens to pay the fees needed for Canadian immigration, which this year has gone up.

The Canadian government would also need to analyze the economy and political climate in order to determine what immigration targets would look like after 2020. Canada will announce its strategy for multi annual immigration levels by November 1.
